Art Express

February 09, 2018

It takes hard work to bring the flicker of a creative idea to full realisation. Outstanding art students from public high schools across NSW can see the fruits of their labour on display at one of the most anticipated events on the cultural calendar, ARTEXPRESS.

Federation congratulates 2017 HSC students, and the efforts of their teachers, whose body of work has been selected to for this year’s ARTEXPRESS exhibitions, with the first opening on Australia Day at the NSW Art Gallery.

ARTEXPRESS is a dynamic and popular exhibition featuring a selection of outstanding student artworks created for the 2017 HSC examination in Visual Arts. The works, not to mention ideas, span a broad range of media, including ceramics, drawing, graphic design, painting, photomedia, printmaking, sculpture, textiles and fibre, and time-based (or new media) forms.

As Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott said: “To have an artwork chosen for ARTEXPRESS is an immense honour.”

Doonside High student Dain Cousins drew inspiration from the Early Netherlandish painter Hieronymus Bosch for his work Art should Comfort the Disturbed and Disturb the Comfortable (a quote by street artist Banksy).

He cites Banksy and Bosch as influences, especially the latter’s The Garden of Earthly Delights, as well as controversial Australian visual artist Ben Frost.

Exhibitions have opened since Australia Day at the NSW Art Gallery and Griffith Regional Art Gallery and will be rolled out across the state over the year. (See dates below)
