The war in Ukraine

March 19, 2022

The NSW Teachers Federation joins other unions around the world including Education International (EI), the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), civil society organisations, and the global community in condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Let us be clear: this is a crime against humanity.

Since the Russian military invasion began, the world has witnessed countless deaths, the destruction of villages, towns and cities including the bombing of schools, hospitals, vital infrastructure, and residential areas causing the displacement of millions of Ukrainians now seeking refuge from the war.

We condemn the Russian President’s implied threat of the use of nuclear weapons which would have catastrophic consequences for all of humanity. This gives added urgency to calls for hostilities to cease.

The Federation has a long and proud history of opposition to war and support for peaceful means to resolve international conflict. It was a 1947 UNESCO Conference that declared, “All Wars Are Fought Against Children”, a profound concept former Federation President Sam Lewis brought back from that conference and which became embedded in the culture of our union.

The invasion of Ukraine has heightened tensions across the world. This conflict reminds us of the responsibility of all nations to pursue peace, to respect human rights everywhere, to recognise the right of peoples to self-determination, to strengthen democratic institutions, to respect international law, to end military power blocs, to welcome and care for all asylum seekers and refugees displaced by conflict, war, climate change and famine, to abide by Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, and to end the international arms race.
