Summit heralds Public Education Day

May 26, 2022

A special summit is being held in Melbourne today to mark Public Education Day, with a commitment to steer the incoming Labor Government’s education agenda in its first 100 days in office.

The Australian Education Union is hosting a Public Education Summit involving all its state branches as well as academics, economists, education experts and allies, to identify immediate actions that the new Government should take for public education in the first 100 days of its term and beyond.

Representing NSW Teachers Federation at the summit, President Angelo Gavrielatos said critical issues facing public education remained unchanged after the election and there was much work to be done with the new Government.

“On this day we celebrate all that is good and great about public education, the power to transform lives by providing the highest quality education for all students regardless of their background or circumstances,” Mr Gavrielatos said.

“It is a critical time, as we urge the new Labor Government to prioritise public education funding and policy reform and to establish timelines for the delivery of its public education election commitments.”

During the campaign, Labor promised to “work with every state and territory to get every school on a pathway to reaching its fair funding level” in relation to the schooling resource standard (SRS).

Mr Gavrielatos said “This must be achieved within this term of office. We cannot accept further delays as ultimately, resources delayed are resources denied.”

“We are ready to work with the Albanese Government to realise this urgent policy commitment,” he said.

“During his victory speech, Anthony Albanese expressed a promising vision for the nation of no one being held back or left behind.

“To make this vision a reality, the new government must address the deep inequalities across the education system by investing in public education and the teaching profession.”
