CPL courses offer invaluable ideas for new members’ professional toolkits

The Centre for Professional Learning runs several courses to support Federation members who are new to the teaching profession.

Courses specifically designed for teachers in the first two years of their career (and fee-free) are:

  • Early Career Teachers
  • Classroom Management through Effective Teaching courses.

The Early Career Teachers course addresses classroom management, NESA accreditation, planning and research, programming, mentoring and career building.

Feedback from members includes, “I feel more confident now that I understand the accreditation process”, and “I really enjoyed the course and learned a lot about programming and resources available online”.

Completing an Early Career Teachers course will contribute five hours of NESA Registered professional development addressing 1.2.2, 2.1.2, 2.2.2, 3.1.2, 3.2.2, 4.2.2, 4.3.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

The Early Career Teachers course is scheduled for 5 April at Blacktown and 3 June at Surry Hills.

Effective teaching strategies are covered in the Classroom Management through Effective Teaching course. Programming for student engagement is a key message.

Members’ feedback includes “The presenters had a wealth of experience and gave a lot of ideas and strategies that are classroom ready” and “seamless and interesting day”.

The Classroom Management through Effective Teaching course will run at Blacktown on 10 May, Surry Hills on 27 June and 24 October, and Charlestown on 11 September.

Other course offerings

One-day courses generally cost $200 and conferences $250.

Other courses/conferences that may interest beginning primary teachers include:

  • Essentials of Teaching Mathematics K-6
  • Implementing a Daily English Block using the English K-6 Syllabus
  • Primary Conference Your First Years of Teaching.

New secondary teachers will be interested in the CPL courses/conferences based on subject areas.
