Over the past two years, TAFE activists have built a campaign that has not only changed political policy but also engaged the mainstream media and the community to join the fight to save TAFE in NSW.
During the Stop TAFE Cuts campaign activists have worked alongside the NSW Not For Sale campaign run by Unions NSW. The peak NSW union body chose a doorknocking strategy, used successfully during the Victorian and Queensland elections, to implement the NSW Not For Sale campaign. It involved local activists having conversations with constituents about how their jobs were affected by current government policies.
TAFE activists have been involved in doorknocking from the Blue Mountains, through Londonderry, Campbelltown, East Hills, the Shire, Gosford, Maitland and Oatley electorates, knocking on many thousands of doors, challenging residents’ traditional political views.
Commuters and shoppers have also been greeted by Stop TAFE Cuts activists. Others have spent time letterboxing, writing to their local members of parliament or participating in “meet the candidates” forums.
