Answer

If a temporary teacher is offered a permanent teaching position in another school by the Department of Education and Communities then the teacher should immediately accept the position then negotiate with the two school principals the starting date at the new school.

Question

I have accepted and commenced a temporary position but my circumstances have changed and I need to finish before the agreed time. Can I do this?

Answer

Sometimes a temporary engagement is terminated before the end of the engagement. In the case of a teacher initiated termination there is no notice period that needs to be given although as much notice as possible will help the school organise a replacement.

Question

I am working in a temporary position but I need to have some time off school to deal with something. Can I take some leave or do I have to finish up?

Answer

In most cases temporary teachers are entitled to a pro rata amount of the leave entitlements that apply to permanent teachers. Generally, though, temporary teachers will not be granted leave without pay (LWOP) during a temporary engagement unless special circumstances exist. However LWOP can be granted for short periods to cover special circumstances. Applications for LWOP should be discussed with the principal who can approve such leave.
